Fourth of July Floatation Fashion – Life Jackets & Boating Safety

Post by:  Chuck Wilson

This weekend many of us will be taking our Independence Day celebrations to the nearest recreational body of water. Nothing says summer to me like boating, BBQ’s and of course a great fireworks show. These holiday weekends are always memorable times with family and friends. I just want to help make sure it’s memorable for all the right reasons. So, let’s dive in! (pun intended)

Life Jackets – Wear it. It’s very simple. No matter how tempting it is to not bother on a nice day, just wear it. Here is a common excuse, “but, I’m an excellent swimmer”. Doesn’t matter how good you are if you are thrown from the boat violently in a collision, or you thump your melon on the side of the boat and go overboard. What if you are overcome by carbon monoxide from a boat motor? That vest is the best line of defense against a bad outcome. I’m an excellent swimmer too, one who’s had extensive training in operating in water, and I always wear my lifejacket. To not wear it is an unacceptable risk. Besides, life jackets have come a long way. Some on the market today are just plain cool looking! Be sure to choose a Coast Guard approved model and make sure it fits right. Remember, adult life jackets are not suitable for kids.
